Job description

The Civil Peace Service (ZFD) is a global programme for the prevention of violence and peacebuilding in crisis and conflict regions. Experts of the ZFD support partners on the ground in their long-term commitment to dialogue, human rights, and peace. In Iraq, the ZFD has been involved since 2017 in dealing with the serious crimes committed by the Islamic State (ISIS). Approaches of dealing with the past, psychosocial support and dialogue processes at community level are intertwined. Together with the Institute of Psychotherapy and Psychotraumatology at the University of Dohuk, the ZFD strengthens psychotherapeutic interventions through training and networking with local organisations

Your tasks

  • Supporting the master’s programme at the Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychotraumatology (IPP) at the University of Duhok
  • Supporting the planning and implementation of conferences and seminars (including fundraising, documentation and reporting to donors)
  • As part of the ZFD team in Iraq, you will work with other professionals in your thematic area and contribute to the impact achievement of the programme
  • Accompanying practice-based research by IPP students, graduates, and lecturers together with external local and international researchers
  • Identifying the needs of governmental institutions and civil society organisations that accompany traumatised communities; networking and exchange with the IPP; possibly designing further training measures together with IPP lecturers in the field of systemic therapy, e.g. family therapy.

Your profile

  • Master of Arts in psychology or social educational training with proven basic knowledge in psychology (or a similar degree)
  • 3 - 5 years of proven experience in transcultural psychosocial work with communities that have experienced massive violence
  • Knowledge and confident application of participatory methods of adult educationof the history, culture, and political situation of Iraq
  • High level of intercultural competence and resilience as well as ability to adapt in ain a very fragile context
  • Work-related experience abroad, ideally in West Asia, as well as knowledge of the history
  • Experience in the conceptualisation, planning and implementation of practice-oriented research, training, and the production of relevant information materials.
  • Further training in the field of systemic therapies or trauma therapy
  • Business fluent in English, good knowledge of Arabic and/or Kurdish would be an advantage

The security situation is critically tense. It requires continuous monitoring and special security risk mitigation measures for GIZ staff. GIZ staff must adhere to security measures at all times. Please also check the county-specific information provided by the German Federal Foreign Office. GIZ runs a professional security risk management system in the field of deployment. The freedom of movement is severely restricted. It is not possible for life partners and family members to move with you to the country of deployment.

At the site of operation the particulate pollution occurs to be many time higher than the European acceptable limit. As part of the selection process and during the recruitment examination you will be informed of appropriate protective and behavioral measures.

Travelling in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and to neighbouring Ninewa is required.
