What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) responds worldwide to humanitarian needs through its global network of delegations. The ICRC is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.

In order to ensure predictable, sustainable and quality funding for its operations, the ICRC has set itself the goal to diversify the source of income, increasing the share from private fundraising streams and developing high-value partnerships and strategic collaborations.

In a context of evolutions in the external environment and volatile humanitarian funding, private sector actors have become essential partners. In line with the ICRC’s strategy for digital transformation and the increasingly online nature of our work, digital fundraising is a key programme for acquiring new donors, retaining existing donors, focusing on unearmarked funding when possible.

Purpose

The Global Digital Fundraising and Engagement Officer supports the development and implementation of a long-term digital fundraising strategy and the overarching fundraising goals of the ICRC. S/he works closely with colleagues across REM, Communications, other units and on occasion with Movement partners to implement and execute ICRC’s digital fundraising strategy. S/he works with colleagues in these teams to test digital fundraising appeals and campaigns and gather insights, to then develop and implement enhancements which increase engagement, acquisition, supporter loyalty, retention and income generation.

S/he helps to drive and coordinate the optimization of ICRC's digital fundraising, focusing on social media ads, web optimization and email as main channels for acquiring and retaining donors and providing support and advice to colleagues working across the different private audiences. S/he also develops our supporter engagement, including creating supporter journeys and is responsible for fundraising-specific platforms. S/he reports to the Global Individual Giving Advisor.

Accountabilities & Functional Responsibilities

  • Ensures accurate, timely and effective delivery of digital content, optimized for seach and audience engagement, partnering with Audiovisual Producers, social media leads, web editiors and Digital Officers primarily at HQ and in the regional communication centres.
  • Creates and documents best practices and develops digital projects for official social media accounts and the website, engaging with and delivering content to priority audiences.
  • Digital lead generation. Creates content, executes, monitors and analyzes targeted fundraising, lead generation and conversion campaigns on social media and other online advertising platforms, ensuring the highest possible ROI and other relevant digital fundraising metrics e.g. LTV, as well testing ideas and different opportunities. Grows new leads and marketing-qualified leads, by converting site traffic through calls-to-action, landing pages, etc.
  • Focused on the conversion stage. Leads on the planning and execution of optimization efforts for ICRC's web platforms, donation pages and fundraising drives on the ICRC website, including but not limited to form optimizations for digital fundraising and lead generation actions.
  • Supporter Journey Development. Develops and implements successful supporter journeys, including welcome packs and supporter communication cycles for different audience segments and is able to proactively steward these journeys, ensuring integration of supporter acquisition campaigns with other offline activities e.g. telemarketing campaigns.
  • Participates in the planning, coordination, segmentation, targeting, set-up, testing, broadcasting, reporting and optimizing of digital supporter journeys through email, messaging apps (including chatbots and WhatsApp) or other channels.
  • Supports the development and lay out/implementation of emails, newsletters and messenger journeys. Liaises with the copy and design teams to brief the required assets and assure they are delivered on time.
  • Appeals and Emergencies. Supports the development of fundraising packages for appeals and emergencies for use by Movement partners and works closely with National Societies to explore opportunities for ICRC to co-ordinate, co-design or implement fundraising campaigns.

Accountabilities & Functional Responsibilities

  • Uses a variety of analytics tools to identifiy and understand social media audiences and behavioral trends.
  • Keeps up to date with sector best practices and imports improvements where possible and/or testing related to them.
  • Coordinates approach and testing with existing external suppliers and manages the commissioning of creative professionals and agencies to provide collateral and assets by projects and campaigns.
  • Ensures that different fundraising audiences other than Individual Giving are supported by ICRC’s digital fundraising programmes (employee giving, matching giving).
  • Conducts research to provide recommendations on optimizing existing digital fundraising efforts.
  • Assists the Global Individual Giving Advisor in other related projects when the need arises.
  • Ensures that the ICRC’s Ethical Policy and policy regarding use of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Emblems are followed at all times.
  • Ensures that work follows both legal and best practice guidelines for fundraising.

Relationships

  • Internally, interacts across REM and COM, where necessary providing guidance beyond these Divisions.
  • Externally, interacts with media, followers, digital agencies and key audiences.

Certifications / Education required

  • Degree or equivalent experience in communications, marketing or journalism, preferably with a digital background and specialization (managing websites, social media platforms, video projects, etc.)
  • Relevant qualification in digital marketing, fundraising and e-commerce fields.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills. Fluent English is essential. French and / or German is highly desirable.
  • Advanced digital proficiency.

Professional Experience required

  • Minimum 6 years’ working experience.
  • 4+ years’ professional experience working in digital fundraising with experience optimizating and driving revenue performance of social media platforms and web/app campaigns and platforms.
  • Solid knowledge and experience in community engagement and people-centred approaches.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the digital landscape, in particular social media, messaging apps and digital security.
  • Experience of using Facebook Business Manager to create, monitor and optimize adverts.
  • Several years of proven experience with Google Display Adverstising.
  • Experience creating and / or working with designers on the development of image and video content, optimized for social media advertising.
  • Experience of digital fundraising campaign management and implementation, including budget management.
  • Knoweldge of reporting and monitoring success of ads against KPIs.
  • Ideally experience with an advanced CRM system such as Raiser’s Edge or MS Dynamics or equivalent and platforms such as Hub Spot and/or Mailchimp.

Desire Profile & Skills

  • Project management, ability to work with multidisciplinary team members (graphic editors, writers, programmers, etc) an asset.
  • At ease with senior staff, good interpersonal, networking and organisational skills.
  • Experience interacting and negotiating with suppliers/agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Self-starter with drive to research, create and develop new fundraising opportunities, while understanding how to decide trade-offs.
  • Clear communicator who can act as the bridge between technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Excellent writer and communicator (in both the written and verbal form); editorial mind-set that seeks to understand what audiences consume and how to create it.
  • Highly analytical and able to derive meaning from data; detail oriented.
  • Understands the customer/ supporter decision journey for different clusters and audiences.
  • At ease with CMS, Platforms gateways, and CRM systems.
  • Good understanding of the technical environment of a website.
  • Experience and domain knowledge in manual testing.
