Reporting to the Head of Media Relations in the Office of Communications, the Social Media Manager (SMM) will lead and implement the foundation president’s and organization's social media strategy — developing, executing and evaluating our social media ecosystem across multiple platforms to optimize audience engagement and growth. The SMM will have a deep knowledge of the social media landscape, a network of online contacts, and an abiding curiosity about news, social justice issues, cultural trends and best social media practices and techniques. He/she/they will have excellent writing skills, the confidence to fully engage the foundation and its leadership in online conversations, and can understand and communicate the foundation's institutional voice, positions and programs.

Social media is a key communications tool in expanding the foundation's reach and engaging, in real time, with key influencers, leaders, organizations and audiences who can shift the needle on social change. The manager will have proven experience developing and executing successful social media campaigns— both the paid and free— and knowledge of winning tactics and approaches. He/she/they will have a keen ability to identify and engage target audiences on an array of platforms and tailor content specific to each one. The manager will have a clear understanding and ability to use measurement and evaluation tools, systems, and techniques, as well as experience in analyzing and utilizing this information to produce successful strategies and tactics for growing audiences and deepening engagement. He/she/they will work in collaboration with the Engagement and Insights team to produce social media performance metrics on a weekly basis.

The SMM plays an integral role in the Office of Communications, working closely with Media Relations and Strategic Communications staff to ensure that social media is fully integrated into all communication and media outreach activities—including developing strategies and content to amplify the voices of foundation leaders, grantees and partners. The manager will work closely with colleagues on the Creative team to ensure that content delivered through our other channels, including the website, live programming, eblasts, and print materials, reaches and engages our target audiences. The manager will be a creative thinker with well-tuned instincts and understanding of news, key issues and trends for timely online messages and interventions as well as an eye for content packaging and creation. They will bring a sound knowledge of general communications strategy and will develop a clear command of foundation work and goals. The manager must be able to communicate with ease and confidence to staff, leadership and partners at all organizational levels.

The SMM will advise and execute for the foundation’s president, and executive leadership team, in particular, helping them to maximize opportunities and use the medium in smart, effective ways. They will also offer advice to foundation staff to help them maximize their social presence, influence and audience growth. They will create clear guidelines for staff on engaging in social media that are readily available and accessible on internal platforms.

Additionally, the SMM will spend anywhere from 10 to 20 percent of their time on other digital content and outreach projects.
