Consultancy Title: Communications, Environmental Health

Duration: 11.5 months (15 July 2021 – 30 June 2022) extendable to a second 11.5 months duration

UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments. UNICEF has over 12,000 staff in more than 145 countries.
UNICEF crystallized and clearly articulated its Health programme priorities towards the Sustainable Development Goals, in documents such as the Strategy for Health, 2016-2030; Health Systems Strengthening Approach, and most recently the Strategic Plan, 2018-2021. The 2018 Global Conference on Primary Health Care recommitted to strengthening primary health care (PHC) as the most inclusive, effective and efficient approach to enhance people’s physical and mental health, as well as social well-being, and that PHC is a cornerstone of a sustainable health system for universal health coverage (UHC) and health-related SDGs. These agreements and developments at the global level serve to guide UNICEF’s health programmes at country, regional and global levels.
Research has documented that environmental pollution is a major factor of ill health, poorer developmental outcomes, and death among children, as well as a contributor to worse health outcomes later in life. Millions of children living in low-and middle-income countries are at risk from elevated lead levels in their blood. UNICEF’s Health Programme has rolled out its strategic framework on Healthy Environment for Healthy Children that aims to expand UNICEF’s health programmes to address these challenges as part of multiple SDGs. As part of this programme, UNICEF is a co-founder to the “Protecting Every Child’s Potential” initiative.
This consultancy will support the communications, advocacy and resource mobilization for Healthy Environment for Healthy Children programme and the consultant will lead communications for the “Protecting Every Child’s Potential” initiative. The consultant will be based in the Office of the Director, Health in NYHQ’s Programme Division and will report to the Senior Programme Manager. The incumbent will collaborate with the Environmental Health Specialist, colleagues working on Environmental Health in Programme Division, Division of Communications, Public Partnerships Division, Private Fundraising and Partnerships, UNICEF USA and relevant UNICEF Country Offices. Additionally, the consultant will be working closely with partners involved in the proposed “Protecting Every Child’s Potential” (PECP) initiative.
The consultancy is office-based and full time.
Terms of Reference / Deliverables
Based on monthly plans, the consultant is expected to support the following deliverables over the duration of the contract:
