Job Description

This is an interim backfill role to cover for an employee who will be covering an employee on leave.  The duration of the assignment is targeted for 9 months starting in April/May. However, the start and end dates may change.

Division Summary 

In June 2020, the foundation established a new Communications Division, led by the Chief Communications Officer, to oversee the foundation’s global communications strategy. The division brings together internal and external communications to advance the foundation’s mission of a more equitable world.  

Group Overview 

The global Content and Campaigns team will be responsible for targeting and engaging priority audiences with compelling content and campaigns to help advance our advocacy and programmatic goals and support the foundation’s brand. The director will oversee development and implementation of integrated marketing campaigns and manage foundation brand channels in alignment with our priorities. The team includes responsibility for Goalkeepers, gatesfoundation.org, The Optimist, the Discovery Center, and the channel strategy and social media management for the foundation and our leadership.  

Overview and responsibilities

The Social Media Manager will work closely with colleagues to handle the foundation’s flagship social media channels and will serve as the primary social voice of the foundation. 

The Social Media Manager will also be responsible for growing and engaging our social media followers from around the world. Tactics involved in this body of work will include managing, scheduling and posting the day-to-day posts on our flagship channels; developing content and social media plans; engaging in comments and conversations; and exploring—and testing—nascent tactics that will get more people around the world to care about foundation issues.  The strong candidate will be a sharp, digitally-minded writer with experience running social media accounts on behalf of large and/or sophisticated organizations.

S/he should have a strong sense of curiosity, excellent judgement, willingness to collaborate, and good grasp of standard social media measurement. Global experience and/or fluency in additional languages is a plus. 

  • Serve as the primary digital voice of the foundation. Strong, compelling writing is a requirement.
  • Handle the foundation’s flagship social media channels including: writing posts, scheduling content and coordinating social media calendar, monitoring conversation, engaging with community members, and gleaning insights about channel/community performance.
  • Help drive select social media content, acting as a creative partner to the content development team. Share insights from social media work regularly with content team to ensure content is optimized for social.
  • Develop and implement strategic social media plans for priority social media moments.
  • Run digital tools and train internal users.
  • Update and maintain guides and processes related to digital channels including: social media playbook, social media account management, intake requests, and more.
  • Working with team lead, explore and develop new channels, content, and experiences that help us reach our communications goals. Input into and help drive implementation of social media strategy.
  • In conjunction with measurement colleagues, report on channel and community performance on a consistent basis.
  • Share digital media expertise with colleagues across the foundation on a consistent basis, including writing a weekly report.

Qualifications

The strong candidate will be digitally-minded with experience in social media channels. S/he should have a strong sense of curiosity, excellent judgement and a willingness to collaborate.  Global experience and/or fluency in additional languages is a plus. Additional qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years of experience
  • Direct experience leading social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn on behalf of organizations
  • Ability to convey sophisticated ideas through compelling, pithy writing
  • Familiarity with enterprise social media tools, and understands how to draw insights from available social media measurement
  • Proven track record of using social media to meet objectives, and ability to articulate how social media can be used for awareness, advocacy or action purposes.
  • Experience trying creative approaches to reach new audiences on digital
  • Raises concerns or questions appropriately before responding to requests
  • Has some knowledge of the needs of specific cultures and geographies
  • Ability to both think strategically and execute on a tactical level

The employee transfer policy applies to internal backfill positions. An employee may apply for an open position after at least 12 months in their current position. If you meet this requirement and wish to pursue a backfill opportunity, you are required to have a conversation with your manager to confirm their support before you apply. In rare cases, the requirement of a minimum of 12 months in a position may be waived if a transfer is critical to the foundation’s goals and is approved by the current manager and their HR Consultant (HR Business Partner or Generalist).

All backfill positions are posted as LTE roles. With current manager support, if selected for the role, FTEs will retain their FTE status during the backfill assignment. Managers will have the option of backfilling for the individual moving to the interim position for a similar duration via the same hiring channels and options as this position. However, current managers may be unwilling or unable to hold headcount for the duration of an interim assignment and may deny the employee’s request. In such cases, the employee may apply for the open LTE position, but if selected, would effectively be resigning as an FTE and would be hired as an LTE for the duration of the interim assignment. As an LTE, employment with the foundation is expected to end at the end of the assignment, and the employee would not be eligible for severance.
