CARE Canada is looking for two Financial Analysts, one 6-7 month contract, one permanent

ABOUT THE ROLE / WHAT THE ROLE OFFERS

Reporting to a Manager, Financial Analysis or a Head of Programs, the Financial Analyst oversees project financial accounting for a portfolio of both long-term development and humanitarian programming. They ensure that contractual and compliance requirements are met and for ensuring effective project financial management. With the underlying goal of strengthening, promoting, and implementing best practices in locally led, empowered program management, the Financial Analyst is responsible for ensuring the funds are used for the intended purpose, donor compliance requirements, supporting the development of project proposal budgets, providing analysis on project expenditure against budgets, investigating variances and providing risk mitigation.

This involves the project accounting cycle, continuous review, updating and analyzing the portfolio performance of Global Programs to ensure adequate planning, forecasting and measurement of the Global Programs team budget targets. The incumbent is also expected to provide support, technical advice, and capacity building to Country Office staff as needed.

While you will be working closely with colleagues on the ground, under current COVID travel restrictions, travel will not be a possibility for the duration of this contract. You will be home-based, at a location of your choosing, in Canada, and must have the legal right to work in Canada.

Because of the nature of the work, demands are fast-paced and unpredictable. To thrive in this job, you will need to be flexible and be willing to both lead and work as part of a close-knit team when needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Contract development, negotiation and setup for new projects and proposals

  • Contract monitoring and donor reporting: preparing financial reports and analysis, flagging key risks, and providing analysis to program staff

  • Compliance and capacity building: understand donor regulations and support Country Office staff to implement them

  • Risk management: ongoing analysis and information on key financial risks, and mitigation strategies

  • Monthly financial review and accounting processes: track and monitor cash needs, and undertake end-end processes

  • Project and year end audits: support documentation and responding to auditor inquiries

WHAT YOU OFFER / ABOUT YOU

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in French

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Finance Officer or Analyst

  • University degree in Accounting or similar field

  • Experience with project financial accounting functions in an NGO or similar setting

  • A thorough understanding of budgetary processes and variance analysis

  • A thorough understanding of accounting processes as they impact on the overall financial system

  • Experience communicating financial information to management and donors

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

  • Ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance personnel in a simple manner, without the technical / accounting jargon

  • Strong computer skills specifically in Excel, Outlook, and the Windows operating environment

WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU EXTRAORDINARY

  • Experience working for an International non-government organisation (INGO)

  • Professional accounting designation (i.e. CA, CMA, CGA)
