Job Description
Org. Setting and Reporting
This internship is located in the Analytics and Visualization Team of the Analytics and Project Management Section (APM) of the Business Transformation and Accountability Division (BTAD) in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC).

The Analytics and Visualization team of DMSPC/BTAD/APM designs and develops advanced analytic and visualization solutions for global clients. The team responds to client requests based on a complex question that requires analytical treatment and visualization methods that are not possible using standard approaches. The team applies methods that include statistics, descriptive and predictive data mining, machine learning, algorithm development, modeling, forecasting, and customized visualization.

The internship programme is for a period of two months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, pending on the needs of the department.

The internship is UNPAID and interns work remotely up to five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
As part of the DMSPC/BTAD Analytics and Visualization team, the technical intern will be responsible for the following duties:

• Contributes to a custom developed analytic and visualization framework / library.

• Develops reusable code and components that can be integrated into other projects.

• Transforms data sources for analysis and visualization.

• Develops analytic algorithms and visualization layouts (graph, tree, map, chart, etc.).

• Optimizes application for maximum performance, speed and scalability.

• Configures a sustainable build environment to efficiently manage continued framework /library development.

• Supports client requests using the above mentioned approaches.

• Performs other duties as required

Ability to render libraries such as SVG.js, D3.js, Pixi.js and Three.js as well as use code versioning tools, such as GIT. Shows pride in work and in achievements. Demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results. Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

• Applicants are required to:
(a) be computer literate in standard software applications;
(b) have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
(c) have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

• It is desirable that the applicants have proficient understanding of:
(a) data manipulation libraries such as LoDash, Moment, JStat, and related;
(b) rendering libraries such as SVG.js, D3.js, Pixi.js and Three.js; or
(c) cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.

Special Notice
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
