Position Title: Psychiatry Fellowship in Global Mental Health Delivery

Position Overview:

The Dr. Mario Pagenel Fellowship in Global Mental Health Delivery provides an opportunity for career development in global mental health service delivery and research for post-graduate psychiatrists. Fellows develop expertise in the field while working with Partners In Health (PIH) and in collaboration with the Harvard Medical School Department of Global Health and Social Medicine in the Blavatnik Institute.

The Fellowship is a one to two year placement with a PIH sister organization in Haiti, Rwanda, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mexico, or Sierra Leone. By building capacity through the mobilization, training, and professional development of in-country health care providers, PIH and HMS seek to support locally feasible and sustainable structures for mental health care and, over time, to establish generalizable models for systems of mental health service delivery. The Fellowship offers a combined focus on clinical care, training and education, research and advocacy.

While most of the Fellowship consists of service delivery work, there is a significant academic research component. The fellow develops an area of academic focus in global health related to mental health service delivery and selects an academic mentor with expertise in their area of interest. Fellows have the opportunity to develop and collaborate in mentored research and educational projects with experts in the HMS Department of Global Health and Social Medicine as well as having the option of participating in ongoing research efforts. Fellows will be eligible to attend a three-week intensive summer program in Global Health Delivery at Harvard Medical School and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Developing strong productive relationships with site-based colleagues to identify core challenges to the quality of mental health care and devise collaborative plans for improvement
• Accompanying local health care workers (physicians, nurses, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, social work assistants and community health workers) in developing their capacity to implement new program initiatives and quality care interventions in mental health
• Sharing clinical expertise at the bedside and through didactic teaching
• Supporting strengthening of a model mental health service at the District (general) Hospital level
• Liaising with the country’s Ministry of Health; and
• Developing an area of academic focus in research or education related to global mental health delivery.

Qualifications:

• U.S. board-eligible or board-certified psychiatrist.
• Applicants must be prepared to commit to at least 75% time at a PIH site over the duration of the fellowship.
• Passionate about community building, sustainability and instilling a community-based approach to global mental health.
• Formal experience in clinical and/or public mental health services, teaching, mentorship, and/or research is seen as an asset.
• Specialty interests, for example in consultation-liaison psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and emergency psychiatry.
• Experience coordinating culturally diverse staff on long term goals and day-to-day activities.
• Demonstrated ability to assess priorities and take initiative on multiple complex tasks.
• Excellent interpersonal and rapport-building skills required.
• Some proficiency in the site local language is strongly preferred.
• A strong commitment to health and social justice.
