Job Description

Consultancy Title: VectorLink Research Analysis Consultant

Project Name: PMI VectorLink

Supervisor: Senior Research Advisor, Malaria

Project Background

Working across 23 countries in sub-Saharan Africa as well as Cambodia, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) VectorLink Project is equipping countries to plan and implement safe, cost-effective and sustainable life-saving malaria vector control interventions with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria. Specifically, the PMI VectorLink Project will build the capacity of country governments to use epidemiological, entomological, and coverage data to support the optimal deployment of vector control tools within each country context while promoting gender equity in all facets of planning and implementation.

The PMI VectorLink Project is seeking a dynamic, self-starting consultant to support the analysis, interpretation and reporting of LLIN durability monitoring studies being managed across multiple countries.

The current LLIN durability monitoring study design was developed through the PMI VectorWorks project to estimate the average useful life of LLINs distributed through mass distribution campaigns. Secondary study objectives are to monitor insecticide effectiveness in the same LLINs and describe major behavioral aspects of net care and repair and their impact on LLIN durability. Durability monitoring is a prospective study with up to 4 rounds of data collection over 3 years.

Specific tasks will vary depending on the needs of each country and may include the following:

  • Support remote quality assurance of electronic data collection through real-time review of study data.
  • Data cleaning and analysis in Stata, following standardized syntax files.
  • Adaption of standardized syntax files to account for future changes to the study design and questionnaires.
  • Produce study reports in English following a standard report template.
  • Review and suggest modifications to standard reporting approaches.
  • Produce dissemination materials in PowerPoint and Word for national and international audiences.
  • Support the programming of electronic data collection questionnaires using Open Data Kit (ODK) software.

Core deliverables for each country engagement are:

  • Clean study data sets in Stata, prepared for analysis.
  • Additional data sets in Stata and Excel files to be used in programming questionnaires for subsequent study rounds.
  • Modified Stata syntax files outlining all data export/import, cleaning, preparation and analysis steps.
  • Technical study report for PMI and the National Malaria Control Program presenting study results, key findings and recommendations.

What are we looking for?

  • Technical experience in malaria research, monitoring and/or evaluation, quantitative data collection and/or operations research, including experience in studies with a strong ITN component
  • Strong previous experience of quantitative data analysis in Stata
  • Strong previous experience developing technical reports for PMI, government and high-level malaria stakeholder audiences
  • Knowledge of current research questions and implementation strategies for malaria prevention through ITNs a plus
  • Record of publication of quantitative (ITN) results in peer-reviewed journals a plus
  • Previous experience of using ODK and SurveyCTO to program questionnaires and field studies a plus
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills
  • Experience working as part of a dispersed team
  • Representational skills and ability to interface with multiple stakeholders in a professional matter
  • Experience working with USAID and/or PMI a plus
  • French language skills a plus
