Program Overview

WRI Indonesia’s peatland restoration programs and initiatives consider field finding as an integral part of its knowledge products, which provide the public with the factual portray of the progress of peatland restoration and protection programs in Indonesia. In the last two years, for instance, WRI’s independent monitoring initiatives heavily depended on its local NGO networks to provide information related to the latest development of peatland restoration and protection activities in their respective areas. Therefore, WRI Indonesia aims to expand its sources of information by engaging individuals with access to factual and updated information to regularly provide necessary information related to peatland restoration and protection. Reports from contracted individuals will enrich content for WRI Indonesia platforms as well as support data and information for its research products.

WRI Indonesia is looking for 4 positions with details as follow:

  • One consultant based in West Kalimantan
  • One consultant based in Papua
  • One consultant based in West Papua
  • One consultant based in Central Kalimantan

Job Responsibilities

The consultant will provide information, reports, and article that should be in line with WRI Indonesia’s focus and interest in peatland restoration and protection monitoring initiatives.

  1. Contractors are based in West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, Papua, and West Papua. WRI Indonesia will select one individual in each of the provinces.
  2. Familiarity with or interest in Indonesia’s peatland issues.
  3. Prior to their works, contractors are required to propose idea of the planned writings or field visits, except Op-Ed articles.
  4. Proposed idea of Op-Ed articles are based on close coordination between Contractors and Pantau Gambut’s network in each mentioned provinces.
  5. Contractors can continue to write articles after the proposed idea has been discussed and approved.
  6. Contractors are required to submit articles with a minimum 1,000 words each.

  • Consultants are required to write opinion independently on behalf of Local CSO’s director as representative of Pantau Gambut’s network in each provinces.
  • The theme of articles are peatland current issues in each provinces, based on close coordination between consultants and Pantau Gambut’s network.
  • Consultants are required to publish the op-ed article to their media network on behalf of Pantau Gambut.
  • Consultants may also be required to provide visual documentations to support their articles

  • Consultants are required to submit in-dept articles of investigation related these issues below:
  1. Implementation of peatland restoration activity
  2. Implementation of Peatland protection commitment (no new license on peatland, regulation no. 57/2016, etc.)
  3. Forest fires
  4. Concession breaches
  5. Other peatland related issues to be determined upon discussion
  • Consultants may also be required to provide visual documentations

Job Qualifications

  • Local journalist with wide journalism network based in West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, Papua, and West Papua (WRI Indonesia will select one individual in each of the provinces).
  • Bachelor degree of Journalism, communications, broadcasting or others relevant studies.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience and/or have passion in Indonesia’s environmental issues particularly peatland management.
  • Experience in writing investigation report is a plus.
  • Familiarity with digital journalism and web-based content which provide expository writing to layman who have no prior knowledge with the subject.
  • Familiarity with local CSO activities in peatland related issues include investigation and ground checking.
  • Strong writing, communication skill and ability to dig into complex and important issues (demonstrated with a portfolio with examples of investigative and breaking news reporting)
  • Knowledge of digital camera, video, GPS and others field equipment
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines as well as ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Period of Work

The initial duration of the service is 3 months. A detailed work plan will be discussed with WRI Indonesia’s restoration team following signing of the engagement contract.

Terms of Payment

  • Consultants are expected to submit 1 Opposite the Editorial page (Op-Ed), 1 in-depth, and 1 feature article during contract period
  • The detailed timeline of article submission should be discussed with WRI Indonesia restoration team, and consultants are expected to follow the timeline in a timely manner.
  • WRI Indonesia restoration team is entitled to request articles occasionally based on classified article and will further deduct the quantity of consultants’ article.
  • WRI Indonesia restoration team will review consultants‘ submitted articles and request additional information when necessary.
  • Consultants may also be required to provide and visual their own documentations to support their articles.
  • Payment will be made for the articles on a proportional basis and consultant required to submit invoice for payment process.
  • Payment is based on article accepted and published on website.
  • The amount of Consultants’ fee is lumpsum. Any cost appear during data collection will not be covered by WRI Indonesia.

Final candidates might be required to take a writing test and to produce two writing samples when needed.

Consultant rate: Consultant rate is commensurate with experience and skills.
